Hey, you successfully got someone to subscribe to your email list, congratulations!

This is the first kind of conversion you should chase and improve upon, in my humble opinion.

Well, and data supports it. The average ROI for email marketing is 3800%.

What does this mean? That people getting subscribers through payed advertising are getting $38 for every $1 they spend. Imagine what this means for free traffic which is what we learn to get here at the WA.

How effective is an email marketing campaign? The right one will turn your subscribers into fans!

In my previous post "I Got Visitors! Now What?", I explained how I struggled when I started chasing email subscriptions, today I'd like to show you how to easily turn this subscriber into a fan!

My First Email List Mistake

When the first person subscribed to my list, I went after the second, and the third, and so on...

I wanted a list in the hundreds, at least.

My problem is that I study and learn too much theory. But with all the theory then I go looking for numbers and forget the rest of the process.

What happened to my subscribers? They didn't even know they subscribed to my list...

Yeah, they were giving me their email address, getting their PDF in return, but that's it... these people never knew who I was, never received an email from me... I doubt any of them remembered me.

So when I started emailing them, why would they open my emails?

To be honest, I now wonder how more people didn't unsubscribe...

How can you avoid this problem?

Create an autoresponder welcome sequence with a minimum of 3 emails.

Email #1 - Say Hi and Let them Know You

The Welcome Email - Sent Immediately

There's a lot of data here and experts recommend a lot of little tricks to get people to open your emails, to stay engaged, etc. But I'll focus here on blogging, which is what we do here at WA.

Data says you can improve your sales by some ridiculous amounts if you pop a product link on your welcome email, because it's the email with the best open rate.

Should you try to promote something? Maybe the WA?

My advice is, be yourself!

The Welcome Email is definitely the most important one and has the best open rate, but it's job is to give people a reason to continue opening your emails.

I will not get into tactics to get your emails opened in this article, but my advice for your first email to your subscriber is to be honest and let them know you.

Here are a few things you should cover in your welcome email:

  • Tell them who you are and why you do what you do, in one paragraph;
  • You can share your favorite social profile with them or link to your best article;
  • Create curiosity by promising something on the next email.

Email #2 - Deliver on Your Promise

The Follow-up - Sent on Day 1

On your second email, you'll be giving your subscriber what you promised on the previous one, it can be an article, a special tip, it doesn't matter.

You can easily relate it to WA by saying something like this on the welcome email's p.s.: tomorrow I'll share with you a tip that brought me to where I am and has already changed my life.

And now you start the second email with the story of how you joined WA and what it has done for you and then linking (your affiliate link) to it as your tip.

By doing this you are promoting WA, getting referrals, but helping people, and they will already be thankful to you and know you a bit better by reading your story.

Before you close this email, open another loop in the story, by saying something like: "tomorrow you'll receive an email from me telling you what the best thing about the WA is for me."

Email #3 - A Reminder, Because People are Busy

The Last Call - Sent on Day 2

On your last email of this short autoresponder series (you can use a longer one), following the previous example, you'll be reminding them about the WA.

People are busy, they open emails and get interrupted, sometimes they think "I'll check that later", but as the average person receives around 170 emails per day - it sounds crazy, I know - we lose a lot of them.

So here you'll share with your subscriber the best thing about WA for you - I'd talk about the community here - and just finish of by saying something like it's free forever unless they choose to upgrade or something.

Now They Are Engaged!

You see, it's not that hard, but when we don't know we don't know, and that's what happened to me.

Just by setting up these 3 emails as an autoresponder series (it shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes to 1 hour) you'll be getting very engaged subscribers who trust you and are ready to open all your newsletters and trust your recommendations.

Keep Them Engaged - Email your List at Least Once per Week

Remember to email your list at least once per week, don't let them forget you. But don't stress too much about the quality of the emails.

Email copy is loose and relaxed, even more so than blogging.

Share your life with your subscribers, simple things that happened to you or something you learned and try to connect that with a lesson you learned that they might find useful or promote a product you used which solved that problem.

It's that easy!

If you're still wondering how effective is an email marketing campaign, you now have everything you need to set a very effective welcome campaign in no time.

Now go and set up that autoresponder sequence and enjoy the results!

Have fun!

I love it Fran, as always thanks for sharing.

Thx a lot Jef.

Thank you for sharing, Francisco!
Yes, be yourself or myself because we are the brand itself. We need to let people trust us(where Erin has also just shared on her blog today).
Once we have the social proof, things will be easier.
Nobody wants to buy something from someone we do not trust.
Moreover, our business is not a one-time off event but a long term relationship business :o)

Indeed Terand, and the World is moving towards a trust-dependant marketing instead of trying to trick people into buying.

Yes, Erin's post was amazing!

I agree with you with both hands and feets up! 🙌🦶🦶

Great advice here!
It almost sounds like your advice is approaching the method used by Andre Chaperons called "Soap Opera Sequences".
Right on with the ROI Statistics, obviously an average over time, across a large number of subscribers.
Also check out (unless you already have, which I don't doubt you have, given your apparent knowledge) Gary Vaynerchuck's "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right-Hook" method for offering value, value, value, and offer.
It has reasonable conversion rates!
People love curiosity yo!
Great post, thank you for sharing it with us, I appreciate it!

Hey C-lab, thanks for your feedback and advice.

Yes, this post is inspired in the soap opera sequence, but I simplified it for WA members, to avoid over-focusing on details and forgeting the other aspects of the business, which I tend to do myself.

I heard Gary talking about that a few times, yes. Thx for the suggestion, I might dig deeper into it.

But it's important to remember that lots of times people don't want value but entertainment, I'm still struggling with this...

Russell Brunson found great results when he started offering less value and more story in his emails. He reports a 10-90 rate value to story.

All the best.

Yes!!! I love how you make the theory come alive through your own experience!! :-) Great post, Fran!! :-)

I kept your recommendation in my mind. Thanks a lot Nathalie!
